Funeral of Matt Malley

Matt’s funeral was held on Friday 15 May, sadly due to the current circumstances, none of his family could attend. Attendance at funerals has been severely restricted due to the Corvid19 pandemic.
However, Matt’s journey to his final summit was not allowed to pass without receiving a send-off befitting of a Troop.
Andy Birkby, who lives close to where the funeral was conducted, attended, albeit he was restricted to staying outside, but he ensured Matt was honoured with an ice axe presentation.

Thanks Andy, I’m sure the family appreciated your gesture.

  1. I didn’t really know Matt as he had served at Leuchars about 15 years before me but I did meet him a couple of times at the reunions a few years back. As I live in Rossendale I offered my services to attend Matt’s funeral when the news of his passing became known.
I felt proud and privileged to represent the RAFMRA at Matt’s funeral. A somewhat strange experience though, being the only one in attendance apart from the undertaker and two of his staff. As Jim mentioned, I was only allowed as far as the foyer though.
    RIP Matt #Whensoever
