Wednesday 01 st January 86 New Years Day

Only two hours into the New Year and the team were alerted by RCC Edinburgh
of an avalanche that had wiped out two people. Within the hour it took
to assemble the team the people turned up so a long rest was had by
everyone, all day in fact.

Stafford Mountain Rescue Team were on route from Scotland to Stafford when informed by RCC Edinburgh by Clansman HE Set, to contact the Penrith Police.
On contacting the police the team were told to assist local teams in the
search of 4 missing walkers in the Kentmere area GR/90/4409. On reaching
the scene Cpl Gilmour was informed of a further 3 people missing.
Stafford MRT were deployed to search for the latter three missing people.
One of the three was located that 90/447099, with suspect head injuries. The other 2 persons were located at 2239Z. Stretcher case Mr R Johnstone, was evacuated that 2230 by 22 Sqn Valley.
Mr Gavin and Mr Johnstone were assisted of the mountain to Hart Rigg Farm GR 90/457061 by the civilian mountain rescue teams. Form R Report number 009 refers to next incident.

Although this incident was the incident we were originally asked to assist
with on reaching the control we were tasked with the three missing persons.
Report A 1/86 refers.

After the three persons were located and evacuation was in progress, Stafford MRT re-grouped with other SAR forces in helping to locate the four missing persons. At 0315Z after an intense search of the Gravel Crag area the victims were located at GR/90/437098. Two of the 4 were found to be uninjured, these being Miss Bland and Miss Haywood. These 2 were assisted off the mountain to Hart Rigg Farm GR/90/457061. The other two victims, a Miss Rowell had sustained injuries to her right arm and leg. This victim was airlifted by 202 Sqn Boulmer from incident site, Dr Stephen Haywood was stretchered off to incident control where 202 Sqn Boulmer picked him up. Both casualties were evacuated to Whitehaven Hospital.

Incident complete 0715Z. Stafford returned to station MRCC informed that 1205Z.

Sgt Patterson +16 were tasked by NRCC to assist in a search for a
missing F4 Phantom and Two aircrew in Aysgarth Nth Yorks. Team left Stafford at 1045Z. On reaching Jun 37 on M6 the control vehicle received
message to RTU. Stafford arrived back on camp at 1645Z.

and they were having a meal later. Due to the social commitment on the

Narrative Cont:

Since Thursday 17th Apr 86. Stafford MRT arrived at control centre at
1545Z Grid Ref 110/72887. The team then deployed to their given
search areas. At 1654Z for girls turned up safely at Grid
110/198015.
Stafford MRT then stayed in the Peak District for their weekend exercise

Sgt Patterson plus four were on W/E training exercise in Nth Wales
whilst listening on Civvy MRT  Freq we heard of an incident
involving 1 male Walker with possible back and leg injuries. We

Narrative Cont:

offering our assistance and proceeded on foot to the incident, on
arriving a helicopter had already transported Civvy MRT members and
Dr to the scene, because of the close proximity of the casualties
position to the rock face it was requested that for the helicopters
evacuation he would have to be moved some 50 yards along a expose
ledge, rope protection had been placed to the rock face the
traverse evacuation of the stretcher and casualty was made,
helicopter was    once more and clear lift was achieved.
Stafford MRT members continued normal training

Narrative Cont:

The Ogwyn Valley area. On arrival at the OVMRT base the team leader was
briefed and the troops were deployed and commenced search in their
designated area. At 1435 Hrs a message was received that a body had been
located at grid ref 115/653587. Due to low cloud a cable way was set up
to make an accessible place for the helicopter to recover the body 2
Bangor Hospital.

Narrative Cont:
Wreckage had been located at Grid Ref 142/312045. Pilot and Nav had
safely injected and were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The
team was then requested by the crash Cmdr to carry out a search
for the Emmons Mae West containing pyrotechnics. Information rec-
ieved from the aircrew gave us the likely area to search but to no
avail. This task was then returned to the crash crew to carry out
again in daylight hours Stafford MRT on route to unit arrived at
0625 hrs.
