NARRATIVE: 







Whilst on routine exercise Hotel 2 (Cpl Clethero) was asked by Langdale Ambleside MRT to assist in the evacuation of an injured hill walker from steep ground on Red Screes. Steven Gallagher, aged 18, from Swillington, Leeds, had fallen whilst ascending sustaining fractures to both elbows, a puncture wound in his chest, multiple cuts and bruises and a serious head injury. The casualty was treated, placed on a stretcher and lowered one hundred feet where he was picked up by helicopter and evacuated to hospital. At the same time Hotel parties 1 and 3 (Sgt Winn and SAC Shaw) were involved with an RTA on the Glenriding road. The driver had displaced his cervical spine and was exhibiting loss of feeling in his left leg. First aid was given and the driver extracted from the car and placed in an ambulance and transferred to hospital.

COMMENTS ON EQUIPMENT:As the Lake District teams have switched to FM, Cpl Clethero had to borrow a civilian radio to enable him to communicate. The service radio on AM being of no use to him.

REMARKS:


An exasperating communications situation. As the Sea King was coming in it overflew the RTA. At this point I tried to make contact using a service radio on civvy AM to no avail. Hotel 2 was only able to communicate using a borrowed FM set. This situation is far from ideal and we must have FM sets to enable us to operate with maximum efficiency.
